Anxiety, Depression, Burnout & Dissociation: Your Brain Isn't Broken - It's Exhausted
Nervous System-Informed Therapy for Neurodivergent, Queer, & Trauma-Impacted Adults Across British Columbia.
When you are neurodivergent, queer, or navigating complex relationships in a world that isn't built for you, experiencing anxiety, depression, and overwhelm is often a completely logical response.
Traditional therapy sometimes treats these struggles as "irrational thoughts" that just need to be corrected. But if your anxiety stems from sensory overload, or your depression is actually autistic/ADHD burnout, trying to "think positively" or use rigid CBT worksheets isn't going to work.
At Clear Skies In Mind Counselling, we don't view your symptoms as a moral failing or a broken brain. We view them as your nervous system doing its absolute best to survive in an overwhelming environment.

Reframing What You Are Experiencing
Instead of forcing you into rigid diagnostic boxes, we explore what your body and brain are actually trying to communicate.
Anxiety & Overwhelm (Engine Revving Too High): We explore anxiety not just as racing thoughts, but as a nervous system stuck on high-alert. We look at how masking, sensory processing fatigue, minority stress, and Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) keep your fight-or-flight response constantly engaged.
Depression vs. Autistic/ADHD Burnout: For many neurodivergent and queer adults, what looks like "treatment-resistant depression" is actually profound systemic exhaustion. We differentiate clinical depression from chronic burnout, focusing on recovering your "spoons," unmasking, and radical rest without guilt.
Dissociation (The Brain's Circuit Breaker): Spacing out, feeling disconnected from your body, or feeling like the world isn't real (depersonalization/derealization). Dissociation is your brain's brilliant protective shield when things get to be "too much". We never force you out of it before you feel safe; instead, we gently build your capacity to feel anchored in the present.
Somatic & Trauma-Informed Regulation
Healing isn't about eradicating every negative emotion or forcing yourself to act neurotypical. It's about expanding your "window of tolerance" so daily life feels manageable again:
Working With Your Body: Talk therapy only goes so far if your nervous system is trapped in fight, flight, or freeze. We incorporate gentle, accessible somatic grounding tools to help your physical body process stress.
Validating Systemic Reality: We explicitly acknowledge real-world stressors—ableism, transphobia, homophobia, capitalism, and systemic oppression—rather than pretending your struggles are all "in your head".
Building a Sensory-Friendly Baseline: Identifying your specific sensory triggers and glimmers, co-creating routines and environments that actively signal safety to your nervous system.
Find Your Baseline in a Safe Container
You don't have to carry this exhaustion alone. Therapy is a space where you can drop the mask, be completely real about how hard things feel right now, and slowly chart a path back to yourself.
I offer a complimentary 30-minute Vibe Check digital consultation. You are welcome to show up exactly as you are—even if that means coming to the call exhausted.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between clinical depression and autistic/ADHD burnout?
While both involve deep fatigue and executive dysfunction, clinical depression is often characterized by pervasive feelings of worthlessness or an inability to experience joy. Autistic and ADHD burnout, on the other hand, stems from prolonged masking, sensory overload, and pushing past your nervous system's capacity. Therapy focuses on unmasking, sensory regulation, and spoon recovery rather than trying to "fix" your mood.
Is dissociation dangerous, and will therapy force me to stop doing it?
Dissociation is not a failure—it is a brilliant coping mechanism your brain uses when reality becomes overwhelming. We treat dissociation with respect. We will never force you to abandon a protective tool before your body feels safe and grounded enough to remain present.
Why doesn't standard Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) work for my anxiety?
Standard CBT often focuses on challenging "irrational thoughts." However, if your anxiety is driven by real-world sensory overstimulation, minority stress, or neurodivergent masking fatigue, your physiological response isn't "irrational"—it is a real nervous system signal. We focus on somatic regulation, environment adjustments, and unmasking rather than forced positive thinking.
Can we do virtual sessions if I am feeling too anxious or depressed to talk?
Yes. You are always welcome to attend sessions with your camera off, switch to audio-only, use text chat, or bring fidgets and comfort pets into the call. Our space is explicitly designed to be a low-demand environment.
