Beyond Substances: Addressing Compulsive Patterns

Coping patterns aren't limited to substances. We give equal weight to the various ways humans seek relief, escape, or stability in an overwhelming world. Whether a behavior involves a substance or a process, if it is creating negative consequences in your life, you deserve support that addresses the root cause.

Through a harm reduction lens, we focus on:

  • Process Behaviours: Specialized support for navigating compulsive relationships with gambling, shopping, social media, gaming, or the internet.

  • Escapism & Regulation: Identifying how certain habits began as survival strategies to regulate a nervous system impacted by trauma or systemic oppression.

  • Coping & Trigger Management: Developing personalized tools to handle cravings and triggers while prioritizing your safety and long-term stability.

  • Self-Awareness & Root Causes: Increasing your understanding of the underlying factors—such as personal history or neurodivergence—contributing to these patterns.

  • Relational Repair: Assistance in navigating and repairing relationships with family, friends, or chosen family that may have been strained.

  • Empowerment & Life Skills: Building the self-esteem and communication skills necessary to regain autonomy and move through the world with confidence.

  • Healthy Habit Integration: Developing sustainable routines and stress management techniques that support your physical and emotional well-being.

I am committed to providing a safe and non-judgmental environment where your voice is heard and your identity is celebrated. Here, you have the freedom to explore your relationship with substances and behaviours at your own pace, supported by a therapist who truly understands the function of coping. Together, we will work toward a future where you feel secure, empowered, and fully seen.

A Front-Line Perspective on Healing

With two years of experience in high-intensity harm reduction at a Downtown East Side (DTES) overdose prevention site, my approach is grounded in the reality of the front lines. In this space, I don’t see "disorders"—I see survival. While the medical model often relies on labels like Substance Use Disorder or addiction, my practice focuses on the profound reality of your lived experience.

We work together to understand your relationship with substances not as a moral failing, but as a response to systemic pressures and personal history. By prioritizing your safety and autonomy over clinical checkboxes, we explore how your environment and past have shaped the ways you’ve learned to cope. Whether you are navigating drugs, alcohol, or other problematic behaviors, our goal is to honor your resilience while building a path toward the life you want to lead.
